ARRIVING BY CAR

Our casino is located just a few hundred meters from the border to France and Germany. A motorway exit is also in the immediate vicinity.

Approaching from Switzerland or Germany, take the motorway A2/A3 in the direction of France/Euro Airport. Then take the “Basel-EuroAirport” exit followed by a left turn and then continue on toward Euro Airport. After you took the turn and face forward, you will see the red building (illuminated at night even). Take a left turn then at the roundabout and curve around the casino and the immediately adjacent Airport Hotel Basel to reach the car park.

Arriving from France, simply take the motorway A25 via the motorway toll Basel/Saint-Louis. Exit at “Basel-Kannenfeld” and turn left. After about 200 meters, you will arrive at an intersection, where you need to take another left. Following that, you are already driving in the direction of the red building – our casino. Take a right turn at the roundabout and circumvent the casino and the immediately adjacent Airport Hotel Basel to reach the car park.

TAKE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM STRAIGHT TO THE DOOR STEP

Basel

Bus line 50 (the airport bus) stops right outside the casino in both directions. The corresponding bus stop is called “Friedrich-Miescher-Strasse”. By the way, the airport bus runs from train station Basel SBB/ Basel SNCF to the Euro Airport – and back. Depending on traffic, the bus ride from the station takes about 10 minutes and about half as long from the airport, so 5 minutes.

If your train passes through Basel Badischer Station, disembark there and switch to tram line 6 heading towards Allschwil and get off at the stop “Schifflände” (about 7 minutes). There you need to take the bus no. 36 towards Kleinhüningen to the bus stop “Im Wasenboden” (about 7 minutes) and then take the bus no. 50 towards Euro Airport (about 2 minutes).

From the St. Johann Station, you can also take bus no. 50 from “Im Wasenboden” towards the airport – or simply walk to us.

History of the Casino-Gesellschaft Basel

Casino In Barcelona Spain

The founding members of the Casino-Gesellschaft – men from the General Reading Society who gathered for debate, cards and board games – first met in 1808. It soon became apparent that the hired premises on Reinacherhof would be too cramped in the long term.
The “Provisional Committee for the Construction of a Society Venue” (Gesellschaftshaus) began enthusiastically putting its plans into effect in 1820 – its own building in Basel, open to all citizens for dancing, card and board games and debate. The Stadtcasino-Gesellschaft was officially established on 16 February 1824, and operations at the Stadtcasino at Steinenberg commenced in 1826.
1907 The Stadtcasino-Gesellschaft and the Casino-Gesellschaft at St. Jakobs-Garten merged to form the Casino-Gesellschaft Basel.
1937 Riddled with debt, the Summer Casino had to be sold. In 1939, the proceeds were used to replace Melchior Berri’s original Stadtcasino at Steinenberg with today’s main building.
Catering operations and building management were separated in 1970.
In close consultation with the municipal authorities, the Casino-Gesellschaft Basel formulated a project for a “New Stadtcasino Basel” which went ahead from 2000 to 2007 through an international architectural competition. However the winning project by Zaha Hadid was rejected by the voting population of canton Basel-Stadt in 2007.
In 2008, in the wake of this major disappointment, the Casino Committee reformed when 6 of its 9 members resigned. The reconstituted Managing Board embarked on new plans with fresh enthusiasm. Extension and renovation work had now become more urgent than ever, and finally got underway in 2016 in close consultation with representatives of canton Basel-Stadt, based on a study delivered by architects Herzog & de Meuron.
